What is regenerative agriculture

Regenerative agriculture is not a fixed model but rather a principle for how to farm.

It’s more than “sustainable” agriculture, as it’s centred around restoring and revitalising the soil and wider environment to support productive farming, not just minimising the impacts of production.

It cannot be defined merely by the outcomes nor the practices and tools used – it is a mindset that takes you on a journey and involves generation as well as regeneration:

  • Regenerating the health of our soils
  • Regenerating the land and ecosystems
  • Generating knowledge, collaboration, and relationships
  • Generating healthy and resilient food and farming solutions
  • Generating value
  • Generating climate change solutions

The 5 core principles of regenerative agriculture

  1. Keep the soil surface covered as much as possible
  2. Limit the amount of physical and chemical disturbance of the soil
  3. Combine a wide diversity of plants to increase soil biodiversity
  4. Keep living roots in the soil for as much of the year as possible
  5. Integrate grazing livestock into the system

Many farmers will have begun the regenerative agriculture journey without realising it or using different words. Our aim with the AgriCaptureCO2 Info portal is to share stories and knowledge for anyone interested in learning more to start a journey together towards climate-friendly and resilient agriculture.
